Reporter Editor in Chief Alex Rogala discusses upcoming articles with magazine section editors during an early morning meeting on Thursday, May 3, 2012. This meeting followed a student executive board discussion on the magazine’s future in light of the pending sale of the Goss Sunday printing press in RIT’s Printing Applications Lab.
Every newsroom in the country is going through this identity crisis, and I find it rather surprising that this is being viewed as a setback rather than an opportunity to grow. The magazine went through similar changes when it shifted from a newspaper format in 1969. This is not the end, it’s merely the beginning of a new chapter. The transition into it will test the skills of the current staff, however, and require better content, a different business model, and an ability to anticipate trends in readership. Not only does the magazine need re-structuring, but it needs to be embraced institutionally if it is to remain for another century.
Reporter Magazine Editor-in-Chief Alex Rogala runs his hand through his hair during a midnight meeting with magazine section-editors. This meeting comes shortly after an executive board meeting to address the shutdown and slated sale of the Goss Sunday press at the Rochester Institute of Technology Printing Applications Lab, Late Thursday night, May 2, 2012.
